This area of the country is economically poor and geopraphically very
rich. Wayne County is reportedly #2 in the country in apple
production, and if you are fortunate enough to be here in the fall
you'll probably agree with a recent resident from Finland who after
eating 2 or 3 retorted, "...these are the best apples in the world!"
Great Lake Ontario impacts on the climate, mood and spirit
of this region providing us with playgrounds in Sodus Bay (3 miles
away), Chimney Bluffs (5 miles away), Fairhaven State Park (9 miles)
and of course there are her open waters or the shoreline to the St
Lawrence River and 1000 Islands Region with Canada along the seaway
trail. Whether sailing, paddling in your own craft or chartering
someone elses, you'll find a lot of ways to reestablish your connection
with "natural flows."
Head South 20 miles and
you can try to balance your wine tours with biking through grand vistas
overlooking Canandaigua, Cayuga and Seneca lakes. A warning
though-if you go into the litttle village of Naples, do NOT eat their
Grape Pie. If you do, your mouth will forever water at the mere
mention of it (as mine is now).
New York City is an hour by plane out of Syracuse or Rochester or six
and a half hours by car. Personally, I enjoy Amtrac through
the Mohawk Valley to Albany and then along the Hudson River and into
those incredibly sculpted railway tunnels with their stratified walls
so filled with evidence of humanity's great struggle.
So there are alot more places (Buffalo, Toronto, etc.) and things to do and see, but - Hey, get some work done.
